How to Create a Personalized Self-Care Plan to Take Control of the Overwhelm in Your Life
The topic of self-care is everywhere nowadays. While we can all agree that self-care is an incredibly important part of our well-being, I (Haleigh Kreber, LMHC) often see self-care framed as simply taking time to read a book, drinking a cup of tea or taking a long, hot bath. While those things can all be great and actually can be considered self-care for some people, why is it that they often don’t leave us feeling as energized and grounded as we hoped?
I like to use the analogy of my mom’s Tupperware cabinet (sorry, mom!). I want you to envision that cabinet you open oh so slowly in anticipation of everything tumbling out. When life feels like it’s overflowing with expectations, obligations, stressors, etc., it’s like that overflowing cabinet. Where is shutting the cabinet door and taking a bath going to leave us? Still with an overflowing cabinet.
We need to take a look at what containers (expectations, tasks, habits or routines, etc.) are no longer serving a purpose in our lives. Which container is missing a lid or has spaghetti stains and is time to part with? What I’m getting at is, we all can benefit from taking time to reassess and tweak areas of our lives that are no longer serving us, to allow for more room for the things that do. This is often the part of developing a self-care plan that is missed, and really, what leaves us feeling unsuccessful in our ever-evolving journey towards feeling present, grounded, and whole. The goal is to create a life where self-care is not an escape when we’re at our wit’s end.
Here are some steps you can take in identifying a self-care plan for you:
1. Start Small, Stick to the Basics
Maybe for you, it is setting your alarm 15 minutes before your kids wake up to take that time to enjoy your cup of coffee and set an intention for the day. Over time, you’ll develop more options and specific forms of self-care that work for you.
2. Make it Intentional
Self-care needs to be an intentional plan, rather than something you just do when you find the time (let’s be honest, how often do we just stumble upon free time for self-care?).
3. Be Conscious and Make it a Priority
In other words, if you don’t see something as self-care or don’t do something in order to take care of yourself, it won’t work as such. Be aware of what you do, why you do it, how it feels, and what the outcomes are.
