Do you get headaches sometimes?

In the last year, I can remember 3 main headaches that lasted from 3 days to 6 weeks and I certainly took my share of over the counter pain relievers (acetaminophen and ibuprofen) when nothing I was doing was helping and I couldn’t sleep, or couldn’t be nice to my family, but eventually I had to get to the root of the problem.

Here are 5 things to try:

1. Hydrate.

No matter what we MUST ensure that we’re drinking enough fluids and that those fluids are mostly water. I drink my share of coffee, but I also get AT LEAST 60 ounces of water per day. My skin looks better, bowel movements are easier and headaches happen less often.

2. Sit on your perineum.

That’s the area between the vagina or scrotum and the anus. Sit in front of your sit bones and lean forward a little. Sit on the edge of your chair. Positioning the pelvis properly improves posture all the way up the spine and eases neck and shoulder tension that contributes to headache and migraine pain almost 100% of the time.

3. Watch how you use your shoulders when moving your arm.

When using neck muscles to move arms for thinks like drinking tea, those muscles get mad because they’re doing someone else’s (read, shoulder muscles’) job so they hurt. And when they hurt, they refer pain into the head.

4. Relax.

Lie down and imagine your head weighs 500lbs. Soften the jaw and the eyes and the shoulders and the ears. Here is a video with a guided relaxation meditation to help.

5. Finally, get professional help.

Find a physical therapist who is an expert in manual therapy who can help with both the muscles and the joints. Even better if that therapist is trained in dry needling. When I had that six week headache back at the beginning of the year, the ONE thing that finally pulled me out of it was dry needling. This is so effective when combined with all of the above!!
